Characteristics of traditional painting

Ink painting has its own distinct characteristics. Is not simply to reproduce the appearance of the subject, but to capture its spirit. The creative requirements of Chinese painting do not demand strict adherence to reality or to a particular angle of view or source of light, the painter has complete freedom in terms of artistic conception, structural composition and method of expression. To give prominence to the main subject, it is quite permissible to omit the background entirely and simply leave it blank. At the same time, since the sizes and shapes of the spaces in the painting are different, the very absence of content can itself create rhythm and variety.

Compared with western paintings, There are differences in the use of color between Chinese painting and modern western painting. Chinese painting aim is not to express the various shades of color of the subject in relation to a fixed source of light, but to express the characteristics of the different subjects. In his classic book Composition, American artist and educator Arthur Wesley Dow (1857–1922) wrote this about ink wash painting: "The painter ... put upon the paper the fewest possible lines and tones; just enough to cause form, texture and effect to be felt. Every brush-touch must be full-charged with meaning, and useless detail eliminated. Put together all the good points in such a method, and you have the qualities of the highest art".

Painting tools

Pen The pen can bring out the charm of ink best. The writing brush is a traditional writing habit in China, and it affects north Korea, Japan and other Asian regions. Chinese calligraphy and painting are inseparable from the use of brushes.

Ink

Most inksticks are made of soot from pine or oil combined with animal glue.

in ink-and-wash paintings it is possible to use ink alone to create a rhythmic balance between brightness and darkness, and density and lightness, and to create an impression of the subject's texture, weight and coloring.

Paper There is a wide variety of Chinese painting paper. Not only paper, silk, etc., the fabric is the material of painting. However, there are many kinds of Chinese art paper, high yield and good quality. The characteristics of Chinese painting require repeated coloring of the Chinese painting, so it is suitable for painting, like silk fabric. Besides, it is cheaper than silk, so the paper has almost become the synonym of Chinese painting paper.

Inkstone

Inkstones are used for grinding ink. Requires delicate moisture, easy to grind ink, and make ink become smooth.

The above works are digital ink. He combines traditional ink with modern technology. The artist photographing the change of water and pigments in an instant, very perfect expression the change of intricate relationship between the water with color its effect is also familiar with the experience of Chinese traditional ink, and even beyard the narrative of Chinese painting. Wash ink experience to a more abstract modernity.

-Water is the most popular and creative image symbol in Chinese culture.

Those works gave me a great inspiration. The artist drop ink into the water and to shoot a dream like a plantom pattern. The ink constantly changing, framed by photo, but you still can feel its dynamics. This is what I want to find the feeling, the kind of soft, illusory although the screen is not specific shape. But though the use of water and ink also can feel very beautiful artistic conception.
